Joseph O. Dean, Jr., Ph.D., R.Ph.

Dr. Joe Dean has devoted his professional life to the education of student pharmacists. Through his dedicated service, Samford University pharmacy graduates are known to be in the vanguard of meeting today’s healthcare challenges. Dr. Dean is a Samford University pharmacy graduate and received his doctor of philosophy from the University of Alabama as well as an honorary doctor of pharmacy from Meijo University in Japan. For thirteen years he practiced in community pharmacies and then went on to serve Samford University for over three decades. In 1991, Dr. Dean was named Dean of Samford’s School of Pharmacy. He was largely responsible for the development of the school’s endowment, which led to its new name, the McWhorter School of Pharmacy. A recipient of the Bowl of Hygeia Award, Dr. Dean also led his school through the establishment of a doctor of pharmacy curriculum and the completion of two major facility renovations.
